Post-quake shift to west puts pressure on families GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING

The trend of moving west postearthquake is taking its toll on families. The Salvation Army said about 374 Hornby families have sought help over the past three months for food, an increasing trend it says is caused by families moving west. Hornby Auxiliary Officer Eric Turner said a “pile of accommodation was closed down in the Linwood and Aranui areas because of the earthquakes. He said some could not afford to get into another house and they

have to go the waiting list for Housing New Zealand or the city council and pay storage in the meantime. â€œThat’s why Hornby is noticing an increase. Moving hits people. It is a huge expense.’’ After the February 2011 earthquake, the west, including Hornby, became the main location where people worked, after the central city was gutted of 50,000 workers. Data showed that many families moved west to be closer to jobs. With Christmas on the horizon and back-to-school costs in January, he said some families were getting loans they could not afford to repay.

“We are noticing people are getting caught by loan sharks. People who promise the world and deliver nothing but debt.’’ Mr Turner said an example was a lady who signed up to a cellphone and internet package that she thought was free and turned out to be a two-year contract. This year along with phone and online donations for their annual Christmas appeal, The Salvation Army is asking for people to ask for good fortune through their Gift of Hope campaign. Vehicle break-ins on the rise in Riccarton GEORGIA O’CONNORHARDING

Riccarton is facing a growing problem of vehicle break-ins according to a community watchdog. Riccarton Community Watch said it has been asked by police to beef up its monitoring of surrounding areas due to the increase of vehicles thefts. Group secretary Geoff Parfitt said the increasing problem of cars being broken into was partially due to the hot weather. People were opting to leave their windows down, he said. The increase of residents in the area meant more people were forced to park on the road, like on busy Elizabeth St, also causing them to be at risk of break-ins. “You go down Elizabeth St at night and you swear there is a party going on. There’s no parks in the street.’’ Recently, the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton lobbied the city council to get angle parking on Elizabeth St.

City council staff are still investigating. Police did not respond to phone calls or emails to the Western News regarding the issue. Mr Parfitt (right) said if people were going to park on

new

the street they needed to ensure all valuables were out of sight. “Just a simple thing like having nothing in your glovebox because that is the first place they will go to in your car,’’ he said.

Let’s not forget those still struggling this Christmas Christchurch Methodist Mission Executive Director Jill Hawkey Christmas; that season filled with Christmas work parties, end-of-year school productions and malls playing carols filled with shoppers. In Christchurch, the Christmas season continues against a back drop of a city that remains broken. But let’s not forget that people are the most important component of a city. Five years on from the first earthquakes, there are many people who continue to struggle. Local research shows there is a marked difference in the wellbeing of homeowners whose repairs have been complete and those who are still waiting. Other families continue to struggle paying rents that increased significantly postearthquake with Christmas adding another layer of

SOAP BOX financial pressure. The Christchurch Methodist Mission has a vision for our city of a socially just and inclusive society in which all people flourish. An important aspect of our work is supporting children and their families in 34 primary and intermediate schools. One of the schools we work in is the new Halswell School. City Mission has been there since June 2014 providing support to its pupils and their parents. Even though their surroundings are new, some old issues stemming from the earthquakes remain. For a

number of parents, they have been so consumed by repairs or insurance issues that the simple fun things they used to do with their kids no longer happen. Recognising this, the City Mission is supporting the Summer of Fun, where local community groups, parishes or neighbourhood associations organise fun days for their local community. Fifty different events are taking place across the region and can be found at www. bethere.co.nz (Summer of Fun). They’re free, fun and it is a good chance to build some memories with your family. As the city looks ahead, let us continue to be mindful of those who are continuing to struggle so that we can build a city where all people flourish. Have you had you repairs completed? Have you noticed a positive effect this has had on you? Or are you still waiting? Email your thoughts to georgia.oconnor@ starmedia.kiwi

Environment Canterbury is investigating why its widespread bus changes from last year have not seen an upsurge of patronage. A readers responds. A and C Fifield: We have lived in Prebbleton for nearly 50 years. Our closest shopping centre is the Hub Hornby, the next biggest is the Bush Inn Centre. However, when the bus routes were changed about 12 months ago, it was decided we all wanted to go to Riccarton and directed the buses down Springs Rd and Blenheim Rd, by-passing both our usual and preferred shopping areas. The bus patrons were not asked if this was our preferred option. We do not want to go to Riccarton, for our everyday shopping needs.

Now that we are gold card holders, we have changed our dentist, optician, chemist (etc) to the areas closest to us. But to get to these it makes more sense to go by car, because we do not want to spend all day backtracking on buses, to where we want and need, to go. Having to change buses also makes it difficult to arrive in time for appointments. Of course, sometimes when we want to travel into the city, the service is fine. Surely, it would make sense, to alternate the routes, so we have a choice as to where we go? This would also help the school students who were greatly affected by the changes, eliminating the need for the special bus services which have now been made for them, before and after school. Common sense should prevail.

$3000 for shopper Star Media managing director Pier Smulders (right) has drawn the winner of Star Media’s Shop N Win competition. Nathan Auimatagi is the recipient of a $3000 shopping spree. He shopped at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy in New Brighton and was randomly drawn out from more than 16,000 entries. The annual spring promotion

New twist to bus priority plan

Fears parts of Riccarton Rd could collapse GABRIELLE STUART

The controversial plans for the Riccarton Rd bus priority plan has taken a new twist. While city council is hoping to install bus lanes along Riccarton Rd in the coming years, parts of the road could be in danger of collapsing unless the underground water networks are repaired. The city council needs to decide if it will go ahead with fixing the underground water networks on Riccarton Rd, at the same time as it digs up the road for the bus lanes. It began on Tuesday with a deck fire on Yaldhurst Rd, and a small patch of grass on fire in a garden outside Westpac Bank on Halswell Rd. On Wednesday tree stumps were on fire in a paddock on Hawthorden Rd, Avonhead. The same day a bathroom on Boston Ave in Hornby had a small fire. On Friday, Sockburn fire brigade responded to calls of a mattress on fire on the corner of Centennial Ave and Peverel St, in Riccarton,. When they arrived just after 1am, they found it was a couch on fire. NEW ROAD NAME Fendall Lane has been approved as a name in a subdivision off Fendalton Rd. It will pay tribute to Walpole Fendall who subdivided his land to create what is known today as Fendalton. The applicant submitted six names – The Stables Lane, Riverbank Lane, River Lane, Otakaro Lane, Bridge Lane or Fendall Lane. All the names would have been suitable for the location, but the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board said all are in existence in other parts of the city. The subdivision will create seven new properties.

Santa Claus

Father Christmas gears up for It is all hustle and bustle up in the North Pole with Christmas preparations well under way. But Santa Claus thought he’d make a stop at Northlands Shopping Centre. Georgia O’Connor-Harding speaks to him about his favorite song, what he wants for Christmas and which toy is all the rage with the children this year Hello Santa! It is so exciting to talk to you. I’ve always wanted to know, what is your favorite Christmas tune? I like a lot of them but if I had to choose . . . what’s the name of the dog? Snoopy’s Christmas. I love that song too. How are preparations for the big trip around the world going? Well we are getting all the orders in, all the mail with the requests. And we are just making sure the sleigh is big enough to carry everything. We are making sure

HO HO HO: Santa Claus has arrived and is getting all geared up for his big Christmas trip around the world.

the reindeer are well fed. I’ve also got my GPS all set to go. Nice, I was wondering how do you fit all your presents in one sleigh? It’s a real mystery isn’t it? We get there though. Very good, because many of us are wondering, how do you travel around the whole world in one night? With great difficulty sometimes, but every year we always seem to make it through. It is all go. You see on the television they keep a report on where I am in every country. It is all broadcast to the kids. What toy is in hot demand this year? The minions. It’s a new thing out and is the flavour of the month. I think the iPads were all out last year so the kids don’t want them anymore. They want something new. Ah, the minions. Do the children want big cuddly toy minions or what’s the story there? There are games, books, stuffed toys. A big variety. And apparently there is a shortage in the very well-loved LEGO toy collection this year. How have you and your elves got round that?

Well, there has only been one request so far this year for them. And the boy said just any LEGO. There is a variety of requests but there doesn’t seem to be a lot. I usually get the first bookings. I already have the new Star Wars LEGO collection that has just come out booked. What is your favorite toy to make? Boats are my thing. I’ve done a bit of building and sailing in my time. When you go to deliver these toys all over the world, I imagine there are always a few hiccups along the way. What do you do if someone doesn’t have a chimney to go down? Well it’s a bit of problem these days with modern houses, none of them have got chimneys. We have to improvise but usually they leave a window open for us. Or the garage door sometimes if it is a big parcel they are expecting. When you come down the chimney, what sort of treats are you looking to find this year? I would like a bit of Christmas cake and an orange juice. Any treat that is just off limits?

festive fever Yes. I don’t like alcohol unfortunately but as long as it is Christmas cake and orange juice I am very happy. I cannot forget to ask, how is Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer doing? Will he be flying this year? Yes, he’s all checked out ready to go. He has had his medical test. So far his light is flashing all right. Which list is bigger? The naughty or nice list? The nice list is well and truly bigger than the naughty list. There are only a few naughty ones. Haven’t struck any just of late. Have you had a lot of children come and visit you here? Yes, I have had a few and they are all quite nice. Very polite and they all say “thank you’’ when I give them a gift. That is great to hear, I would like to know, what is the most interesting request you have had? Let’s see. I have had a lot of them. One of the sad ones was a brother and sister. They were about 18 and they wanted their mother to come back home from Auckland and live with them. Apparently she did a runner. And you get the odd kids that

ask for happy families over Christmas. And one child yesterday wrote a note saying he wants his present to go to a child in Fiji who doesn’t get presents. So you see quite a few like that. I think one of the unusual ones was a woman come in and asked if she could have a baby. What did you say to that? I was stuck for words. You must get a few interesting ones through. Yes, and the oldest one that came to see me was a 93-yearold and asked me for some nice new clothes. The youngest was about eight-hours-old. Straight from the hospital to me. this Christmas business? Where do you like to go on holiday? Yes, on Boxing Day I like to put my feet up in the sun somewhere away from the North Pole. It’s too cold up there. I like the Bahamas or the Caribbean. As far as you can go from the ice. Are you concerned about climate change? Yes, we are noticing it a bit up there. We are concerned we might not have any snow or ice up there which will spoil our image. Will you get any presents this year Santa? Ooh I don’t know. Hopefully the elves and Mrs Claus will give me something. It’s like the kids– they don’t know what they are getting either. What would you like for Christmas? It’s time we got a new sleigh. The old one is getting a bit tattered. It’s been around for a few years. Finally, do you have a special message for the children? Yes, just be happy during the holiday period. Treat family and friends with kindness and they will treat you the same.

WIGRAM LIONS CLUB For several years, a group of Wigram Lions have donned their carpenters’ aprons, picked up their hammers, and constructed anther sturdy, twostorey child’s play fort, with steps up one side, a slide down the other, and a climbing wall with rope at the back. Wigram club members are selling tickets for this year’s fort raffle on the weekends. The two main venues are in the car park at the Countdown supermarket in Hornby, and The Warehouse on Blenheim Rd. The club would like to thank all those who have sponsored this project. The raffle will be drawn on December 21, and the fort is planned to be delivered to another family before Christmas. Inquiries on any Wigram Lions Club activities or membership can be made by email to wigramlions@lionsclubs.org. nz or phone 03 3861 581. PAPARUA TEMPLETON RSA The Templeton RSA has been based on 38 Kirk Rd, since the 1960s. Like all RSAs the organisation provides a venue for rest and relaxation

for their members. One does not need to have served in the military system to become a member. The organisation commemorates Anzac, Armistice Day and other worthy historical events. They have a street parade on Anzac Day and just before Christmas Day on December 23. The RSA will host Christmas Songs on the lawn for an hour from 6pm. The RSA boasts a small library and bar area. It hosts socials and similar functions throughout the year for its members. At the moment it is planning the decommissioning of their poppy wall created in concert with their Gallipoli commemorations. The poppy wall is mostly created by local school children and younger folk attending day care centres. The Paparua Templeton RSA has an art group which uses their hall most Mondays, and in the evening, they seasonally hold indoor bowls. Line dancing tuition is held on Tuesdays, and cards are on Wednesday afternoons and they also hire their hall selectively. For more information email paparuarsa@xtra. co.nz

Exposure to new cultures aim of trip

A group of St Thomas of Canterbury College students will be spending an unforgettable Christmas in Calcutta this year. Thirteen senior students along with two staff and two adults have embarked on a trip of a lifetime to India and will be there for the next four weeks. ‘‘We always make a point that Father Christmas turns up and the kids always have a Secret Santa present for each other,’’ senior pathways leader Marty Taylor said. It will be the seventh time the school has arranged for their students to go to the country made up of both affluence and poverty. The students will be visiting schools in India including St Columbus in New Delhi and one of the Christian Brother schools in Calcutta. Another cultural eyeopening planned for the students is visiting homes ran by Mother Theresa in Calcutta and Gandhi

House in Mumbai. Mr Taylor said the students will have the chance to look at how different their culture is to India and some of the issues the country faces. “Basically we are reflecting the difference between New Zealand’s society, culture, faith and spirituality,’’ he said. The school trip will begin in New Delhi before travelling all over the country to the Taj Mahal, Mumbai, Varanasi – one of the holiest cities in India – and Calcutta. Mr Taylor said the trips to India expose the students to a new culture and help them appreciate their life in New Zealand. “It gives the kids a better understanding of their role in the world. Our main purpose is for them to develop a social conscience for the future. They may be able to make some decision that may make a better world or better people.’’ WANDERLUST: Students on a previous trip to India.

Camp fun and action for Hornby pupils South Hornby School year 5 and 6 pupils have had a fun-packed trip to Woodend Christian Camp. The pupils travelled to the North Canterbury camp last Wednesday and stayed there for three days. The Woodend Christian Camp was designed in the late 1950s to encourage youth and local churches. The children were “having a ball’’ and had the opportunity to push themselves in a range of activities including abseiling, kart racing, climbing up an outdoor wall, archery, bungey jumping and watersliding. The facility also have trampolines, a maypole, an old schoolstyled playground as well as facilities for gaga dodgeball and outdoor beach volleyball.

End-of-year camp tests pupils’ skills ANDREW KING

Whether it was testing their skills in the surf or high up in the trees pupils of Wharenui School have thoroughly enjoyed their end-of-year camp. The annual camp was at Hibburt Park this year for year 7 and 8 pupils. They ran, biked, went swimming, had a go at the adrenalin forest and tried their luck with surfing. Deputy principal Janet Ackerley was delighted with the way the camp had gone. “For some of the kids it was the first time they had a go art surfing,” she said. Ms Ackerley said by far the most enjoyed activity was the adrenalin forest. The camp is located out in Spencerville giving the

pupils a free reign when it came to making noise they could even play loud games at night. The pupils participated in the city council forest survivor programme where they had to build a bivouac and taste huhu grubs. The camp was funded by Barnardos and Office Max who donated $2000 towards the costs. The school itself raised $1800 with a “wheel-athon”. “A wheel-a-thon is when you jump on a bike, scooter or anything with wheels and don’t stop for an hour,” Ms Ackerley said. She praised the staff and parents who gave up their time to make the camp special. “We are lucky to have them,” she said.

Helping young develop recognised An inspiring Hornby High School student has been recognised for her efforts in helping young people develop in the community. Year 13 Melanie McFarlane was awarded the Young Totara Rotary Award by the Hornby Rotary Club. The award recognised her contribution to Hornby High School and for her outstanding work in the community. The awards evening were held at the Equestrian Hotel, Hornby, recently. Melanie said she was shocked when she won the award as she did not know she had been nominated.

She enjoys helping out young people because this is the age when a lot happens and friendship, support is important. “I do it to spread positive vibes and show that Hornby is a place to be proud of.’’ Melanie has served on the youth committee, volunteered her time to work as a positive leader for year 7 and 8 pupils, contributed her skills to a weekly community group called Hangout and fortnightly intermediate youth meetings called Energizers. Hangout is an after-school group for friends. Principal of Hornby High School Richard Edmundson said:

Student enters second Civic Awards for heritage work film into Cannes An Ilam broadcasting student has entered a film for the second time into the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Kyan Krumdieck, from the New Zealand Broadcasting School, has entered his award-winning film The Grind which he created with former classmate Annabelle Dick in the world-renowned festival’s short film section. The 69th Cannes Film festival will be held from May 11-22 next year. Mr Krumdieck and Ms Dick were recently awarded best film in the the national Show Me Shorts competition for their 8min documentary. The ideology behind the film is about the encounters of gay and bi-sexual men who use the dating app Grindr. It will be the second time the 24-year-old has entered a contentious film into the Cannes Film Festival. Previously Mr Krumdieck’s

film Peep Show won the United States Campus Movie Fest competition and was it accepted into Cannes. This meant Mr Krumdieck had the opportunity to attend the festival, network and build collabarations with some of the world’s finest filmmakers and promote the film. The film was a silent black and white comedy which was made during a stint at the University of California in Berkeley. “Cannes was an amazing, life-changing experience, but I didn’t have a clue about forming business relationships and networking or what I was doing. But with what I know now, my biggest hope is for The Grind to go back to Cannes with it, knowing what the industry is all about,” said Mr Krumdieck. Mr Krumdieck is waiting to hear if the film has been accepted at Cannes.

The Canterbury Caledonian Society and an upper Riccarton resident have received special awards in recognition for their contribution to the community. The annual Christchurch Civic Awards were held last week. The Wigram-based Canterbury Caledonian Society was recognised for heritage preservation, while Upper Riccarton’s Dr Garth Cant was awarded and for services to education. The society’s secretary and treasurer Jamie McEwan said it was honoured to receive the award. He said said the main purpose of the society was to promote Scottish culture and ancestory

through Canterbury. Just recently the society has completed its new premises in Wigram. Mr McEwan said it was great to have the range of activity groups the society has under one roof after they had to be spread across various areas in Christchurch. The society has a wide spectrum of Scottish-styled classes including pipe band, Scottish highland and country dancing. Memorabilia, historical artifacts and paintings are also important to the society and will be back on display at the new hall. “Everyone can get back to do-

ing what they do best, get back to promoting Scottish culture through Christchurch and Canterbury.’’ Dr Cant works in the department of geography at Canterbury University. He has researched the Treaty of Waitangi Claims, the work of the Waitangi Tribunal, the relationship between Treaty settlements and the Resource Management Act. He has also looked into the interface between matauranga Maori/ traditional ecological knowledge and western science. He said it was great to be around among a great diversity of people and creativity.

Local heroes recognised A doctor who texted first aid instructions during the Christchurch earthquakes and a man who has helps make a neighbourhood a cleaner, safer place has been recognised as heroes. The Kiwibank 2016 New Zealand Local Hero of the Year awards were held at the Addington Raceway recently. Dr Mark Cohen from Ilam was recognised for his work as a community doctor. During the Christchurch earthquakes, Dr Cohen used his

Mark Cohen Graham Pugh medical knowledge and skills to help those in need. He was texting people first aid instructions and help pay for prescriptions for people in the community who were struggling.

Kendal School’s “after hours caretaker” Graham Pugh also received an award. When the school closed at the end of 2013 Mr Pugh kept the facilities looking presentable by maintaining the gardens and pressuring the property management firm to repair any damage. Mr Pugh said: I’ve got a passion for this neighbourhood.” He said the neighbourhood is important and many of his neighbours have encouraged him in his work.

Face consequences of arson THE FLAME FILES BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Last week saw three separate incidents where offenders for arson fires were identified. All three were different. But in common with all is the fact that the lives of those responsible have been changed forever. Being convicted of arson can result in any one of a raft of consequences, from extensive jail time to finding you’re denied entry to many countries because of the conviction. Arson is quite a difficult charge to prove and this may be a reason those that are convicted are often dealt with quite severely. While the person who is fascinated by fire, or by fire trucks, or who wants to lift the finger to the world, probably

thinks little of the result should they get caught, that result can be monumental. A fire that caused quite a bit of damage in a house in Wainoni Rd last week was the result of butter being left on the stove, igniting and setting the kitchen on fire. It’s just a further reason that any time the stove top is being used we need to stay in the kitchen. That won’t happen. We’ll continue to be called. People will continue to suffer the consequences. Sad really isn’t it? A pat on the back to St Alban’s crew. Called to a house near the station they found a plumbing problem soaking the elderly occupant’s property. The plumbing was repaired, the water turned back on. No fire, no real emergency, just decent people helping someone in need. It’s what we do. Well done.

motoring Toyota’s Camry covers all bases SPECIFICATIONS

My wife and I landed at Sydney Airport, we were in Australia so that I could watch the rock band Fleetwood Mac perform in concert. We left the terminal building and climbed straight into a taxi to get to our hotel. It was a reasonably late model Camry, and I said to the driver that I was surprised his car wasn’t a hybrid – like the many other Camrys whose drivers were plying for trade at the airport. His response was that he had always driven conventionallypowered cars, and that he was reluctant to make a change. And he said the previous Camry he owned had travelled over 400,000km without any engine or transmission problems. That being the case, he purchased another and was expecting it to give him the same length of service. Our trip to Sydney happened not long after I had been driving a base specification Camry – a Camry GL, to be exact, which lands in New Zealand at an entry-level point of $45,790.

Price: Toyota Camry GL, $45,790. Dimensions: Length,4850mm; width, 1825mm; height, 1470mm. Configuration: Four-cylinder transverse, frontwheel-drive, 2494cc, 133kW, 231Nm, six-speed automatic. Performance: 0-100km/h, 9.3sec.

TOYOTA CAMRY: Large Australian car at an affordable price.

There are seven new Camry models – four without the hybrid system, three with. And the Camry for 2015 onwards is mostly all-new, it has a fresh new body style, although the floorpan is a carry-over. In many of my recent articles I’ve extolled the importance I place on affordable cars within a manufacturing line-up. The Camry GL is no exception, it doesn’t get a lot of the flash stuff of its stablemates, but it does get everything a buyer would want to make motoring safe and comfortable. Under the bonnet sits a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine which Toyota rates at 133kW and 231Nm. These are healthy outputs for a 2494cc engine, and are generous enough to offer

spirited acceleration; the conventional and naturally-aspirated Camry will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 9.3sec, it will also complete an overtaking manoeuvre in 5.5sec (80km/h to 120km/h). Response from beneath the accelerator feels spirited, the engine is a quick revving unit which feels strong. And it’s not always easy to get a big fourcylinder unit to work smoothly, yet Toyota have developed this engine over a long period of time, and it is now at a point where it works effectively in terms of power and efficiency. Toyota also claims a 7.8-litre per 100km (36mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating which fits well with the test car’s trip computer readout. It

was constantly sitting around 8.8l/100km (32mpg) during testing time, along with a 7/100km (40mpg) figure instantaneously at 100km/h, the engine quite relaxed at 1800rpm at that speed. I took the test car on a burst which encompassed the Gebbies Pass incline. Not only is there significant engine power to haul up the hill quickly, the Camry, as in all generations before it, feels confident underneath and directional through the steering. Providing the grip are high quality and quiet Michelin tyres (215/60 x 16in), I’ve always found them to be an odd compound in a car which is built in Australia, but the reality is they have high grip properties and afford strong feedback to the steering wheel.

The Camry GL is softly sprung; well, I don’t think the suspension is much firmer in the Sportivo variants but the point I’m trying to make is that even without low profile tyres and sport suspension parameters, the Camry GL is an accomplished handling car, it has poise and balance, greater than what would normally be expected from a mainstream car. And that is what makes Camry, it is a car for the tasks we ask of a large everyday car, but it also has the ingredients which place it in the upmarket class, or something quite aloof in terms of design if you go for the Sportivo models. I’m sure this won’t be my last Camry drive before the Melbourne factories close in 2017, but if it is, it will serve to prove one thing, that being how well Toyota as a manufacturing company can cover all bases with its product line-up. I don’t expect that philosophy will ever change.

Stay Calm

this Christmas season Christmas is just around the corner, kids are getting excited, shops are full of gifts, and a lot of adults are getting…. well, stressed!

D

on’t get me wrong, it’s a great time of year but organising family get togethers, trips, food, presents, end of year work projects and all the extra expense puts pressure on everyone. Stress is a funny beast. As a biological response, something triggers our nervous system and we get a release of adrenaline and the stress hormone, cortisol. There’s heaps of other stuff happening biologically, but basically something happens in the world (or even just a worrying thought) and we get a kick of adrenaline and cortisol which we interpret as ‘scary’. In our caveman days it was a lifesaving response. Without it we might have been eaten by wild animals or poisoned by snakes and scary spiders. But in modern society it’s often an overreaction to perfectly normal annoyances in day-to-day life. Prolonged stress can lead to alcohol and drug abuse, and worse. Some people comfort eat, chain smoke or withdraw into themselves. Frustration and short tempers lead to increased family violence and broken relationships. If you value your health and relationships you need ways of

dealing with stress. So let me change any thoughts you might have in troubling times of “I don’t need help, I’m managing ok” into more realistic ones of, “I need to be strong and level headed enough to get through this”. And, “What can I do to help my loved ones, friends and colleagues when they’re stressed?” This simple shift of attitude will make you feel more capable, resourceful and resilient. Here’s a simple technique to overcome stress. It takes as little as five seconds, and used frequently throughout your day can be hugely beneficial. • Adopt a symmetrical body position – for one it’s more comfy, but it also helps in balancing the hemispheres of your brain which supports better thinking. • Look at the sky – look up. This accesses more visual parts of the brain as opposed to internal feelings (looking down). Gazing into the distance has many related benefits too. • Breathe slowly and deeply into your abdomen, focus on your outward breath – this relaxes your body and mind (I learned the outward breath focus at an antenatal class!).

Be Sun Smart This Summer S ummer is just around the corner, and as the days get longer and warmer we all spend more time out in the sun. Now is the time to check our sunscreen supply, whether there is plenty and the expiry date.

WHY IS SUNBURN SO BAD? Sunburn can lead to melanoma and other skin cancers later in life and should be avoided. Research continues into how skin cancers are formed, and what type of UV exposure has the worst effects. Sunburn is painful and potentially deadly, so cover up to avoid getting sunburnt. Find out more about skin cancer. HOW CAN I BE SUNSMART Being SunSmart is about protecting skin and eyes from damaging UV radiation. From September to April when outdoors: Slip into a long-sleeved shirt and into the shade. Generally, fabrics with a tighter weave and darker colours will give you greater protection from the sun. Some clothing is sold with a UV radiation Protection Factor (UPF) rating. Clothing with a UPF of 50+ offers superior protection and could be an ideal choice for outdoor workers.

Slop on plenty of broad-spectrum (filters both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours. Reapply more frequently if sweating or swimming. Slap on a hat with a wide-brim or a cap with flaps. This will help reduce the risk of sunburn to your face, ears and neck. These are the most common places where we get sunburnt. Wrap on a pair of close-fitting sunglasses. When buying sunglasses, look for the words ‘good UV protection’ on the label or swing tag. Remember to always protect skin and eyes when you’re in the mountains, or around reflective surfaes like snow and water, when UV levels are damaging. SUNSMART MYTHS 1) I can’t get sunburnt on a cloudy day. False: You can still get sunburnt on a cloudy day. This is because UV radiation can get through light cloud cover, so unprotected skin can still be damaged. 2) Temperature gives me a good idea of the the chances of getting sunburnt. False: The heat from the sun is caused by

infrared radiation, not ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can still be high even on a cool day, when infrared radiation is low. Just think about how easy it is to get sunburnt on the skifields when it can be very cold. 3) I’m windburnt not sunburnt. False: Your windburn is sunburn caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The wind may make you feel cooler but UV radiation can still be high even on a windy day. Just think about why you don’t get windburn if you’re out in the dark on a windy night. 4) Sunscreen blocks out all UV radiation. False: No sunscreen filters out all UV radiation – that’s why you need to limit your time in the sun no matter what sunscreen you’re using and cover up. 5) Getting badly sunburnt before the age of 20 increases my risk of getting melanoma skin cancer later on. True: If you have a history of one or more sunburns before you turn 20, research suggests you have a much higher chance of getting melanoma skin cancer as you age.

19

6) Wearing a t-shirt in the water is as sun protective as a rash shirt. False: A wet t-shirt may offer only half the protection it does when it is dry. If you are going to be in the water, a rash shirt and sunscreen is a good form of protection. A full body wetsuit gives better protection.

s a graduate of our Bachelor of Social Work with an influential role at Child, Youth and Family, you wouldn’t know from looking at 35-year-old Daryl Brougham the long, hard road he’s travelled. Daryl was placed with 79 different foster homes throughout his childhood. He thought his surname was “Foster,” and his life was a spiral of emotional, physical and sexual abuse from so-called “caregivers” – the majority of whom were not approved by social agencies. Adding to the tragedy is his removal from the few families who, looking back, he believes truly cared for him. Take this story and eventually enter into the picture Te Wananga o Aotearoa at our Manukau campus. Through the beatings, abuse and deprivation of his upbringing, Daryl always held hope that the next home would be better, but understandably at times, his behavior reflected the treatment he was receiving. At one point, a social worker said to him, “Daryl, the way you’re going you’re going to end up in jail.” Daryl’s response? “I looked at him and thought, I’m going to become a social worker. And I will do things differently and better.” Our Bachelor in Social Work not only provided him with the skills and qualifications to follow through with

Better education leads to better jobs Many entry level jobs now require education beyond high school.

T

his is an accelerating trend as the world moves increasingly into the digital space and even relatively simple jobs become more complex. A lot of tertiary programmes are single year or even just six months, and give the person a big leap ahead of other candidates for jobs. “We find that employers want proven skills, not just the intention to do the job well,” says Paul Watkins, marketing manager for tertiary education provider Vision College and TrainMe. “For this reason, we have geared our programmes to be very practical and based on industry needs, which we find are changing constantly.”

For lower level programmes, 16 to 19-years-olds can mostly study for free, while older students can access student loans and allowances, meaning that financing the study may not be a big barrier. “Employers don’t train their staff on the job like they used to, with employers seeking proven productivity from day one,” says Watkins. “As a result, we include realworld projects in our web and software programmes, drivers licence and barista in our Level 1 course, and up to 200 hours of centre placement in our Early Childhood programmes. So they don’t learn theory, but demonstrate it.” This is apparent in the changing face of tertiary education across other

providers as well, with the industry having direct involvement in course design. Minister Stephen Joyce wants measurable career outcomes from study

programmes he funds. There is no question that better education leads to better job outcomes and higher incomes.

Device to Prevent Snoring

B

W

hy put up with broken sleep, when help is at hand with Snorex, an appliance that prevents snoring, sleep apnoea, and dry and raw throats. Snorex is custom-fitted to your mouth for comfort, and a follow up service is provided. Denise Lim has been involved with Snores for 19 years and has had a 98% success rate with people using the appliance. Snoring can be a health hazard, causing sleep apnoea, where the person actually stops breathing for short periods.

It can cause short-term memory loss, tiredness and contribute to high blood pressure. The Snorex device does not feel restrictive, is non-invasive and carries a money-back guarantee. Many people are referred by ear, nose and throat specialists, however, anyone can phone for an appointment. For an information pack or to discuss the Snorex further, phone Denise Lim on 383 0994 or check out the website www.snorex.co.nz

The Importance of Good Blood Pressure!

lood pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular as well as overall health. Healthy blood flow is vital for a healthy body as the blood plasma transports nutrients, hormones, metabolic waste, oxygen and CO2 throughout the body. An area in the brain keeps check on blood flow to ensure health of all cells and the organs they make up. If blood flow is reduced, the brain will try to normalise blood flow by adjusting the heart strength, frequency (pulse rate) as well as the width of blood vessels, all via the nervous system. Over a period of time, the blood pressure may keep increasing due to the deterioration of blood flow. A higher blood pressure is not ideal and it is considered a major risk factor for stroke, aneurysm, organ failure and heart failure. Even moderate elevation of blood pressure is considered a major reason for shorter life expectancy. If we can maintain our blood pressure in the normal range, our overall health will be improved. Systolic blood pressure, the upper figure, is when the heart contracts and pushes blood around the body. Ideally at rest, this should be between 100 to 120. The diastolic blood pressure, the lower figure, is the pressure in the arteries between beats and ideally at rest this should be between 60 to 70. It has been found in around 90 per cent of cases, high blood pressure is caused

by an increase in the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels. It is believed inflammation and stiffness of the blood vessels are major reasons for this increased resistance. Checking our blood pressure on a regular basis allows us to adjust our diet and lifestyle and see the benefits in our blood pressure readings. Blood pressure monitors and further information on how to improve your overall health and blood pressure naturally is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton. Majestic by name…majestic in design 7 Majestic Lane, Thorrington $839,000

L

ocated in the heart of Thorrington down exclusive Majestic Lane, this stylish family home is definitely a must-see. A large family kitchen opens onto a roomy dining/family room, which in turn leads into the spacious formal lounge. A private courtyard opening from the living room provides that all important outdoor space for when summer returns. The entrance is grand in size and will surely impress those who call. A double bedroom is located downstairs as is a generously sized powder room. Upstairs, the feeling of space continues with wide landings leading onto the bedrooms. The master suite is bigger than many living rooms with its own walk-in robe and en suite. The second bedroom is also exceedingly generous – more of a triple sized bedroom than a double, in fact! Bedroom three is a double, and there is a study or box room also at this level. Both the main bathroom and en suite have baths as well as separate showers, and are certainly not small. For those whom a garage is important, this will not disappoint. All this situated on an easy-care section, and in zone for the highly sought after Thorrington Primary and Cashmere High. My clients are realistic and want this property to be sold now, so call now to view. Open Home dates: Sunday, December 6 and 13, 2pm to 2.30pm. To arrange a private viewing of this property, call Debbie Pettigrew from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) now on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411.
